Lenny and Squiggy do plan ahead sometimes, which is why Lenny actually does have cash and a list on him as he waits for Laverne in the lobby. Sure, they wrote the list in crayon on the back of a comic book, and sure, Lenny had all his money with him in a used sock, but at least he's ready to roll.
Laverne doesn't like doing stuff on her own. Lenny is a good back-up when Shirley's not available. And he's pretty good at chores, hardly complaining or arguing, unlike Shirley. He does act like a little kid sometimes, wanting to be pushed in the grocery cart or buying bubble gum. But she usually likes hanging out with him, whether or not Squiggy is along.
He grins when he sees her and she knows he won't object to carrying the heavy stuff. Not that she can't, but it's nice to have Lenny for that.
It helps that he likes looking at her. Looking at Laverne is always fun, just like being with her is.
Hey, if it's lighter than Squiggy it's easy enough to carry around. The girls' groceries usually aren't that heavy unless they're having a Scooter Pie pig-out. At what point he will "innocently" sneak a couple of his own out of the box to graze on.
He's way too happy about not having to bargain the truck from under Squiggy. Before he knows it he's following her out to the convertible -- which someone left open again.
Thankfully it's not raining or anything like last time.
It's a nice sunny day, so she's glad she can have the top down. She does put on a scarf since it's windy and she doesn't want her hair mussed.
Lenny is weirdly happy about this errand, but his emotions are often both over the top and hard to understand. Still, it's nice to have the company. And she'd never admit it, but he sounds good when they sing along to Elvis on the radio.
Being with Laverne's always special, though she never does understand that half the time. And it's always fun to sing with her.
He automatically turns the radio up higher until they finally get to Slotnicks and parks. He lets her handle the car while he gets a cart and waits for her patiently by the front door.
He drags the n and e out for ages and ages, because of course. They head into Slotnicks and Lenny immediately spies something and grabs her by the hand, dragging her toward a big, colorful display of food toward the left of the front door.
He's like a little kid sometimes, especially when he denies it. But she shares his sweet tooth and she can't resist the chocolaty little cakes. "Yeah, I'll pick up a few of these, though I still wanna get Scooter Pies."
Hey, he's grown-up enough to pay for his own King Dings...he thinks...he probably won't have to borrow three bucks from her.
Holding hands with her is such an automatic thing that he squeezes back but doesn't let go. "Okay," he shrugs happily. Two boxes go into their cart. "So what do you and Shirl need?"
He always forgets he's holding it until she calls him out sometimes. It's nice - comforting - but he can't articulate why and knows she doesn't wanna hear it.
He lets go. "Sahrie." Then he leans casually against the cart's handlebars and, for once, does not fall over.
"It's OK, Len." She takes out her list and scans it. "We just got paid so me and Shirl can afford meat. Not like steak, but maybe chicken. Let's head over to the butcher counter."
"Sounds swell to me!" He's plotting on picking up some loose meat, ground beef, spare parts - the kinda stuff he can afford and that he knows how to make taste good on a budget. Once they get there he picks a number for her and one for him, then (poorly) tries to do math in his head.
He's 100 percent oblivious to her finding that gross, as always - I mean, he's seen her eat the brown stuff that used to be yellow.
"Okay, beaks it is."
Once their number's called, he's very specific about how many combs and feet and how much cartilage he wants in his order. The butcher just seems happy to be rid of his garbage. Lenny gets his order and then it's Laverne's turn.
She resists shoving Lenny, even when the butcher, actually named Ham, chuckles. Ham wraps up their meat and then says, "Have a good weekend, you kids." Laverne tries not to blush.
He's actually relived that didn't earn him a shove. As always, he'll take what he can get off of her, in more ways than one. He DOES nudge her vis the kids comment, though.
"So whatcha need next? I've gotta try to get some goats milk for Squig." He's completely ready for her to ask why goat's milk; most people are confused but it always makes sense to Lenny.
Lenny laughs at the idea. The last time they went to the country was for Buttercup, and now he's remembering his plan to flop on the girls, which, naturally, did not come off. "Nah, we buy it here all the time. Squig likes to soak his feet in it. Whattya need next?"

He totally is.

"King Dings! And they're on sale!"

She squeezes his hand to say thank you.
